dip stick reading

Has any one ever heard of dying your motor oil so that it is easier to see the level of the oil and if so what type of dye is safe to use. I know that they have dyes that they put in to check for leaks but they require a special light to see them. I want to be able to check the level without having to have a light.

I usually don't need any dye because the oil is very black, and easy to see. I suspect that any dye that would be put in the oil for this purpose would only work while the oil is clean. Once it gets dirty, the dye would not help. That's why they drill the small holes in the dipstick. My 55 Ford 272 had a dipstick about 3/4" wide and it seemed about the same thickness with crosshatches, etc. It was real easy to see the oil level. I guess it was a cost saving measure to go to those skinny things that rust out. But to answer your question, I have never heard of that. I don't think it would work. But as I have stated many times on these forums, "I could be wrong".
