Power steering fluid screw-up

After replacing a seal on the steering box on my '91, I topped off the pump/reservoir with Type F ATF. I'm not sure what it's supposed to take, but I a striking suspicion that Type F isn't it. What's the likelyhood of damage to the system? What I added has already mixed with what was in there, as I didn't realize my mistake until I had parked the truck and started cleaning up the tools/etc.

I don't know how bad Type F is for your particular vehicle. I would do a search on here about how to flush your system and use what is supposed to be in there (ATF?). I think you disconnect your return line and put it in a pail. Then open your reservoir and top it up and start up the truck. Get someone to turn the wheels back and forth while you keep the fluid topped up. It is easier to do when the front wheels are off the ground so put it up on jack stands (also saves your front tires). Good luck.

I dont know what's supposed to be in your truck, but I know it's pretty hard to mess it up by puttin in the wrong stuff, as long as it's hydraulic fluid with some lubricating properties. In the old Bronco, I've used Type F, Dexron, and generic powersteering fluid at different times and so far nothing has hurt it. I't just a pump and a gear box.

My 88 F-150 and 92 Explorer both call for Type F auto tranny fluid for the power steering in the owner's manual.
