I just bought an 88 7.3 IDI. From reading here I have taken the soup bowl off and now I want to open the exhaust up. It appears that 3 inch is the way to go, whats the cheepest way of doing this? Do I have to buy a new Y pipe rite now or can i rig it up after that to 3 inch. I'm a collge student and dont have a pile of cash just now, so am looking for a cheep way to help it breath.
Side note I find it great on fuel, got 22.5 MPG (Can). not bad for a big 4x4. Just want al lthe power i can get out of it.
I've seen muffler shops just cut the pipe right at the Y and hook the 3" up there. Then just straight pipe it back to the muffler, maybe a 3" glass pack or resonator. You will need to get the tail pipe made or find one off a powerstroke. The P/S pipe is a little bigger than 3" but a welder will fix that.
A muffler shop can run the three inch exhaust back from where the two pipes come together.
I cut mine off the right side 3" before the where the left side dumps in. Then I cut a hole in the side of the pipe for the left pipe to go into.
Weld it all up and I was set to go.
Made a world of difference pulling loads.
The 3" is the way to go. I did it on mine and never looked back. It is 3" from the Y back. I had it straight piped for a while, then put on a Flowmaster muffler. it was cheap work. The muffler cost as much as the labour to put the 3" in. There are cheaper mufflers as well that you can go with, just make sure it is a flowthrough, or easy flowing muffler. If you want, drive it with straight pipes for a week, just to enjoy the sound. Don't get any tickets though if you live in the city. Have fun.
