i need opinions on mounting my 429 in a mud racing buggy my question is do i have to use stock or after market mounts or can i build my own and mount engine solid to the frame. i was wondering if i mount it solid will it put to much stress on the drive trane. also i upgraded to msd coil i need to know if i need to use condenser new coil has no braket for condenser stoke one did thanks in advance
There has to be a place for flexure somewhere. Otherwise, you will rip the engine right off the frame. If you use solid motor mounts, it's imperative to use a flexible tranny mount.
boy this sure helped let me reword my question, has anyone mounted thier motor solid with success and was the trany mounted solid also. do dragsters , monster trucks etc use rubber mounts ?
The motor in my pulling truck is mounted solid with a stock tranny mount. It puts out around 650hp and no problems. My highboy has the same setup with about 425hp and no problems. I can assure you both have been driven very hard and both have 4 speeds.
When you apply torque (twisting force) to a rigid object like a frame, something has to absorb that force. In other words, flexure. That's why engines and transmissions are mounted with rubber mounts.
These people say this works - they have just not reached the point of failure yet. SOMETHING is flexing to absorb the torque, and since it's not the engine mounts or the block, we all know what it is - the frame or the transmission bellhousing.
Eventually, one of them is going to fail. It's not rocket science - it's elementary physics.
I hope you put a thick scattersheild over that bellhousing. Ever seen one explode?
I have a '69 Galaxie out front right now that had a solid mounted 429. The frame is ripped apart. Anybody wanna buy it?
i am just as confused now as when i started this thread, however it seems to me if i mount motor and trany solid it would be u joints and rear ends breaking not bell housing.also i agree you might rip apart the frame if motor is mounted solid and tranny is not, two mounts welded or bolted to a tin can frame is not enough to hold down a big block but four well built mounts probabley is ,i still dont no if i will do it or not i dont want more trouble down the road . any more input would be welcomed. it also seems to me green highboys combo would put stress on bell housing with motor solid and tranny not that would transfer tork to bell housing
I've been running my pulling truck this way for 8 years after pulling L&L mounts apart. It has had probably more stress on it than any other application. It bows and twist in the middle so much the body lines will be mismatched by 2". I ran it for a few years with a stock bellhousing and never cracked it. If you are interested e-mail me and I can send you pics of my mounts. I can't see how you can compare a car frame to a truck frame. I use the factory towers and they spread the force quite a bit. The left side is were all the pressure is as the motor pulls up that side.
thanks the reply dennis ,i tried to mail you but it doesnt want to work , i would like to see pics of your instal as i think i will mount mine solid to motor forsure , tranny still undesided but prbably.thanks email tess100@telus.net
