I noticed there seems to be a lot of play in my steering wheel...I can turn it approximately 1.5"-2" left and right before it feels like I have steering control over the Bronco. Is this normal, I can drive fine with it like this...I would just feel a little better if I knew I had that much more control over the Bronco.
Also, I find that the steering wheel has to be held to the left to drive straight...so it is not straight across. However, if I let go of the steering wheel the alignment seems to be fine compared to how much the steering wheel seems to be turned to the left.
That movement of the wheel without a reaction is normal. Sounds like you could stand for an alignment though. TTB's are notorious for eating tires if not properly aligned.
My Bronco has had loose steering since I bought it. I am sure you could start replacing things, but that would cost a lot of money Rag joints, steering shafts, tie rod ends, and the list goes on and on.
Funny thing is I have never had a problem with tire wear on my Bronco.
I just replaced my steering rod ends last week, I was amazed at how much better the thing drives!
If you can both front wheels of the ground, move the wheels to see if there is excessive freeplay in any of the joints. If there OK it may be slop in the steering box, which can be ajusted quite easily as long as its not fo far gone.
I agree with nordo on the gear box adjustment, there's an adjuster on the top of the steering gear box. Now if you have to hold the wheel to the left to drive straight then you'll need an alignment. Be sure to check all your balljoints and tierod ends.
