dual fuel tank switch

My husband just purchased a 1986 F-150 4x4. The fuel tank switch shows that it is working on the dash, however it really isn't switching over. Any ideas? Thanks.

its the slection valve on the frame rail. the motor is shot. if its equipped with a carbuereter, www.nationalpartsdepot.com is the only place that has them.

if you have EFI, Ford still carries them.

i dont know why auto parts places dont stock it..

My 83 did the same thing, and left me sitting in the median of the interstate with a full tank of gas I couldn't get to! Talk about frustrating. The valve looks like a small solenoid with three plastic ports on top of it for rubber hoses to attach to (One input from each tank and one output to the engine). It was located on the inside of the frame on the driver's side, just behind the cab. I ended up taking an ink pen apart and bypassing the valve with the pen barrel to get off the interstate! Macgyver'ed my way home, but if I remember correctly I got the valve at Auto Zone and it was fairly cheap. But, then again this was ten years ago too.

Hey, I have a 1985 F-150 with the same problem. Will this cause the fuel gauge to read wrong also. Besides the fuse box, what should I check ? Thanjs, Boy, do I love working on Fords, it keeps me from going insane ... Doc
