Literally.
I have a 96 bronco that I rebuilt about a year ago and recently turned on its side during the winter. After it burned up all the oil in head from being on its side it ran fine. two oil changes later it stared smelling really bad like burning oil or burning heating oil. I noticed a large leak around the oil pan and probably should change it eventually, but that is not where the smell is coming from. A few days ago I noticed a puddle of oil but, get this, it is coming from around the gas tank somewhere. I was low about a quart of oil when i changed the oil last, but how can oil be coming from the gas tank.
the only thing I can think of it that some vandalized my truck by maybe dumping oil in the gas tank.
It has a 351 in it
basically I would like to know where that awful smell is coming from and if any one has ever had this happen.
Thanks.
you may have raw oil trapped in the exhaust pipes from when it was on it side, and may have mesed up the converter if you still have one ?? just a thought. DW
That's what I was thinking. regardless though, there is no oil any where near the gas tank. Are you sure it's not leaking from the motor and blowing back there while driving?
The only thing I can think of is you may have bad valve stem seals on your exhaust valves which may explain the smell of burning oil. I'm guessing that the oil around your gas tank may be some of the oil that's trapped in your muffler and it's leaking from the bleed hole. Simple check; run your truck and give it some gas, if you have a bluish tint smoke coming out then expect the valve seals. Hope this will help you out finding the problem.
oil rings DON'T stop all the oil and if it was on its side for a while oil could seep past the rings and into the exhaust system through any exhaust valve that was open. puddled oil will ruin the catalytic convertor VERY fast.
gear oil is a possibility...it doesn't even smell good when it's new. plus, once it's puddled up and seeped into the pavement, i doubt you'd be able to tell the differnce between 10w30 and 90-weight gear oil. if the truck was turned over, it could come out a breather, or like everyone else has said, engine oil could have gone everywhere and is just now getting out of wherever-it-went.
My guess is that it is gear oil. I once pulled a heavy trailer on about a 400 mile trip, and I had gear oil come out of the vent in the differential, and blow on the gas tank. It did not do it on the trip back. The only thing I could fugure is that the vent was plugged with mud, and the heat built up by pulling the heavy trailer caused enough pressure to unplug the mud and blow out of the vent.
If the stink that you smell lingers in your nose for about two days, my guess is that it is gear oil.
