I know this Forum is for pre 1997 trucks but since it is the 1996 style, I thought I would be safe.
I'm looking at buying an F250 HD 2WD 5spd in the older generation body style. Some of the info seems confusing because it does not distinguish between the old and new when describing engine, options, etc.
I could use all of the info that anyone could offer but mainly I would like to know about the engine. I'm assuming that it uses the non-titan pushrod style engine. What should I expect for maintenance/repairs for this engine (if any).
Are there any other differences?
I would also welcome any advice about this model.
Ok so your looking at a 97 F250 right? As you know the F150 ended in 96. But the 250 and 350 went through 97 (probably because they had them all left over from 96.) So anyway the 97 250's and 350's are just like the 92-96 models. They have the same trannys and engines. The 250 will have the 351 or the 460 that was used in the previous years. The 5.4 was introduced into the 250 and 350 in 98.
There are worlds of differences between the '97 Heavy Duty trucks and the '99+ Super Duty line (there was no 1998 model HD/SD offered in the US). Everything from axles, frame, to body & interior changed. To get the "best" info on a '97 HD truck, just look at the specs and details for a 1996 model.
Any opinion on the engines? Would it be better to go ahead and get a 250 with the newer engine design? They both have plenty of power but I haven't been able to compare real world reliability and economy of the two.

Thanks again
I don't like Fords new gas engines. I think the 351 and 460 were both very strong and reliable engines. If you have a good bead on a 97 I say get that over a 99.
Yea thats what I said to I do not like the new style motors. But now I have two of them I like them better than theold ones better mpg the power is about the same as the 351. I got rid of a 1995 F250 351 motor 2 months ago and I am glad I did. Gook luck in your quest
