power steering pump problem

Help! I recently installed a new power steering pump and hoses in my 87 F-150. The pump is full and doesn't whine until the wheel is turned in either direction. It still steers easily and I've cut the wheel each way several times to bleed. Still whines when turning. Someone (a mechanic) told me that it could take a while to work the air out of the system and just drive till it eventually quiets down ( up to a month!). Is this true or do I have a bad pump. Again the pump is new. Any help will be great.

Moved to proper forum.

Is the pump new or a reman pump? Get an actual new pump and use a return line filter in the system. The reman pumps are mostly junk, just someone's old pump cleaned and re-boxed.

Hey, thanks for replying. The pump is a reman. I hate to have to remove it again if it is just air. Do you think the air would of worked its way out already?

Power Steering Bleeding
. . . Service and Repair

Notes

Service and Repair

Verify power steering pump has been properly filled, then start and run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Turn steering wheel to the left and right several times without hitting the stops. Recheck fluid level. If any air bubbles are present, bleed system as follows:

Disable ignition by disconnecting coil wire or ICM.
Disconnect shutoff solenoid to prevent starting.
Crank engine for 30 seconds, check fluid level and add if required.
Crank engine for 30 seconds while cycling steering wheel lock to lock. Do not hold steering wheel on its stops.
Check fluid level and add fluid if required.

power sterring fixed

Thank you for the advise. I disconnected my ignition and cranked it while turning the wheel. After I did this and started the truck it was a lot quieter than before. The next day when I started it and drove there was hardly any noise at all. It seemed to do the trick. THANK YOU AGAIN!! p.s. It took me a while to post a reply. My computer crashed out when loading a new program. Had to reload everything from scratch.

SVDWEB1,
Try a new belt,if you didn't already do that.Next,be SURE it's tight enough. If you have the automatic tensioner, take belt loose and use a wrench and work the tensioner back and forth to be sure it's free so it can apply the right amount of pressure to the belt.
Don't woory about air in the system. They self bleed when you go from lock to lock. The trick is,let it set long enough for the air to wrk itself out of the fluid. This usually takes care of itself over a period of a few days.

My mechanic has a additive especially formulated for Ford. Although you can't see them, the fluid is full of air bubbles. This is like a defoamer. Add an ounce or two he says. I haven't done it yet but he swears by the stuff.

Sorry I let this one slip through the cracks but if someone has a noisy PS pump check out www.lubegard.com for the additive. My mechanic swears by it.
