Standard engine? I don't think so...

I ordered my truck (2000 F250 4x2 CC AUTO 5.4L 3.73LS LWB) almost two weeks ago and it's still "clean and unscheduled". From what I've seen from other posts, a wait for scheduling is not unusual, but my dealer said that only 5% of the superduties are shipped from the factory with 5.4L engines and that they are extremely hard to get on crew cabs. He also said not to hold my breath if I want a 5.4.
What's up with that? They list that engine as "standard" equipment.
I did the (gasp) unspeakable thing and looked at the gmc web site yesterday just in case I need to cancel my order (don't want a v10 or diesel).

Sorry.

Good Luck with any gas engine on a SD. I had a 2000 SD with a V-10 on order from the beginning of October until I cancelled it at the end of January because it still showed "Clean and Unscheduled". I ordered an F-150 in its place, with the 5.4L by the way, and the F-150 has already been built and shipped to dealer as of 2/18.

I understand that an automatic tranny is hard to come by in a SD also.

Doug.

The 5.4 is the "standard". That does not mean that it is the popular motor to purchase in what you are ordering. Honestly, the 5.4 is underpowered for such a heavy truck, IMHO. The reason the V10s are in such short demand is because of the Excursion. I would not think the 5.4s would be that hard to come by in that particular truck. One question that comes to mind for me....Does your dealer have any allocations left so he can get you the truck in the first place? Therein, may lie the problem. Hope for your sake that is not the problem, if you really want the truck in the 5.4.

I have '99 F-250SD CC 4x2 5.4L 3.73 gears and couldn't be happier. I get better mileage than the V10 and it runs my truck up and down the highway just fine. I ordered the truck on March 3, 1999 and had the dealer call me back and tell me it was on the lot on March 26, 1999. As stated in other posts, the alloments that your dealer has for the SuperDuties is how quickly it will get queued. From what I understand about where I bought my truck, they are one of the largest volume truck dealers in the southeast.

Don't be discouraged with the V8, I not.

What the dealer is telling you is that their 1 particular dealership only has a 5% allotment for 5.4L engines..
There are many allotment categories, (engine type, cab type, Lariat, drw are other categories). Each category as an allotment %.

The allotments for a dealership change often (weekly or monthly) and are based on previous sales by the dealership.. So those dealers who sell lots of trucks get bigger allotments..

If you want a 5.4L, goto a different dealer.. A good dealer can get you one in 12 weeks or so.
So, your dealership does not sell many 5.4L's.

example: If a dealer is allotted 12 SD's per month, with 5.4L's at 5%, means you'll have to wait at least 2 months before the dealer has an allotment for 1 of these. (5% of 12 is less than 1).

So, its not the factory, its the dealership..

Thanks for the info.
I'm still waiting for a build date, but haven't given up yet. Leaning towards the 5.4 for the mileage, but if I can't get it I may end up getting a v10. Well, that's a good excuse to get a bigger trailer, right?

Thanks again,

Dave

Don't wait too long to decide to switch to a V10. If you do you'll have another 3 month wait.

The 5.4 being "standard" mean it's standard as is no additional cost. Since that is the least expensive engine, the build that price into the base price. All other engines are upgrades. I too originally order my truck with the 5.4 and then upgraded to another engine. My dealer told me too that only 5% of the build allocation if for the 5.4 engine. If you happen to order your truck when they are building SD with the 5.4 engine, lead time can be reduced. If not, you may be waiting a LONG time.

Standard engine? I don't think so...

I have a 2000 superduty 4x4 sc Lb with the 5.4 and the 5sp tranny and 4.10 gears, i now have 7800 miles on it and i only pull a 5000lb bass boat, i was getting about 12.9 at first with mixed city highway driving and pulling the boat.. Now i get almost 14 all the time, boAT or not, and as for power, well my best friend has a truck indentical to mine with the v-10 and 3.73, he claims he can hardly keep up with me while pulling our boats, and he only gets 10 mpg, if your not pulling anything very heavy i say the 5.4 is enough power for sure, and hey 14 mpg is alot better than 10 i think.. We recently had ourselves a little race with out the boats, needless to say he cusses my truck on site everytime he sees it, that v-10 is said to be so strong, maybe with a heavy load it is, but empty i leave him in the dust, and with our 5ooolb boats he claims he struggles to keep up, just food for thought guys. I love my truck..............!
