I have a 89 F-250 351 engine. Has 3 pumps 1 in each tank and 1 on the rail.
My problem is sometimes the pump on the rail will run and sometimes it won't. I replaced the relay and the pump turned on, I let it run for a little shut it off and the pump wouldn't go off, then I turned it back on after a coulpe minutes the truck stalled which it does from time to time and the pump shut off. Now I turn the key to on and the pump doesn't turn on again. Is the pump bad? Or did I get a bad relay? I have already replaced the pump in the rear tank.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jason
I'd say that the pump is bad. How many miles does the truck have? I had this happen to me on my '87 - it would cut out driving down the road, and then kick back in after a few seconds. It did this several times, and then it did it one time and I couldn't get it going again. I replaced the pump, and haven't had any troubles yet.
It has about 60,000 but is a plow truck, and it could have been turned back. The truck sat for about 6 months before I bought it. Thanks for the help kinda had the feeling I would have to replace the pump.
Isn't there a relay for each tank? Pump change isn't abad idea just for maintenance sake. Does it cut out with either tank? How's the wiring condition? Change the filter.
Changed the relay again seems to be working fine now. We'll have to see if it keeps working. It did not work with either tank. Thanks for all your help. Will keep you posted if it goes out again. Thanks again.
Now, just don't let it get it past down 1/4 gas level on each tank if you want to increase the life your in-tank fuel pump. In-tank fuel pump needs the fuel to cool itself.
If you can, put a "hot lead" (12vdc) right to the fuel pump and a good ground and see if it will run for a bit. Sounds like the truck has been sitting and you either have a corroded wire(ground or voltage/hot) or a worn pump.
