2000 Expy with 4.6l 4x4... 11-12 MPG no matter what I do... What is the one thing I can do to get better mileage... I thought about aftermarket exhaust but don't want it sounding like a sherman tank... i realize it's a small v-8 pushing 6000 lbs of steel around, but this thing is a GAS HOG...... Love the truck... Any suggestions?
Exhaust and a chip will help you. After that we are talking big bucks... bolt on turbo, etc. I'd trade it in for a diesel. I am getting 22.4 in town with mine and my F350 wieghs in at 8K...
i have 03 f150 supercab 5.4 3.55,mac cold air intake from motorhaven, magnaflow 3" single in/out exhaust from www.fulllineexhaust.com[ no interior drone ] and amsoil in diffs, transfer case, tranny and engine-truck has 13k miles- in ciity driving i have yet to see less than 15mpg- looking forward to highway mileage
Any thing that helps the truck "breath" will help out alot. (exhaust, intake) Like go said, a chip will help as well
those things will help it ypu continue to drive like you always did. most people actually get less w/these mods because they like to accelerate hard to feel the added power and hear the exhaust.
How about take off your muffler and put on a cherry-bomb. I think the catalytic converter is restrictive enough for the engine back pressure. I did this and got more power with little change in sound. Get higher ply tires so you can put in higher air pressure. Stiffer tires roll better.

One thing that most people don't think about is rear end gearing. Depending on the size of the gears in your rear end affects your fuel mileage alot more then what people think.
What gears to you currently have in the rear end of the Exploder?
rear end gearing is uaually not worth it. you may gain 1-2 mpg, saving you maybe 50 bucks a year. the gearing will cost a few hundred bucks. double for a 4x4. its not worth it for gas mileage reasons.
