Playing in the sand....

well, i took my 78 out into the sand today, it was a champ, of course the sand was wet, so that could have helped. it was fun, my first time taking it off road, ive only had it a week so i dont wanna do anything too crazy until i know everything isnt gonna go out on me.

one problem, and its probably not a problem at all, but i tried going up an embankment, and it stalled on me, it also stalled a couple other times, usually when i was going at a crawl or stopped and i accellerated hard.

anyways, the next step is mud, and its been raining here in the rain capital of washington, so hopefully when the clouds break i can get some time to "paint" the bronc brown.

If you have the original carburator, then depending on the pitch of the embankment and the length of it..could be your prob. That is why the 4wheelers love the fuel injection. Doesnt cut out on steep inclines. There are however, kits you can get to help that. I have the EFI so I am not real familiar with the kits, but I do know they exist and they do work. Try looking at www.jegs.com Performance parts.

That's true, it only takes a little incline to stall out most stock carbs. If you drive much in dry sand, it helps to keep from getting stuck if you air down the tires to about 15-20 psi, and take it easy on the throttle. Just don't go so low that you pop a bead! If you lose traction and start to spin, you will only dig a deeper grave for yourself. The lower tire pressure helps you "float' on top of the sand. Some real mud will test how much torque your engine has. You should be able to stop in a mudhole, then crawl or jump right out. You can give the throttle all it needs to get you out in most cases.

yeah, i really dont think i need to worry too much about airing down the tires as the ones on there are pretty wide as is. and the tires seem a little low . my friend had a jeep and hed take that thing in the sand and it would drive circles around all the "big" trucks. and his tires were just regular tires (well, A/T's i guess).

im kind of apprehensive about the mud. only because ive never had a 4x4, let alone one that has a chance in a mudhole.

Jegs or Summit Probably has a carb for your ride that wont stall out on inclines. I had a 79 Jeep CJ7 with a 401 in it and I bought a carb for it that had "off-road" floats and some other pats in it for inclines, it worked good. I cant for the life of me remember the name of the company that did the off road rebuilds on the carbs though...they were in southern California, that much I remember. If I think of the Co. Name I'll post it. Just look around, they are made!
Have fun in the mud! Everyone with a four wheeler has played in themud at one time or another!
