six quarts really?

Just did the first oil change in my truck.

I bought 6.0 quarts of mobil1 and used a motorcraft filter I already had (I buy them by the case from the dealer)

Anyway, with 6 quarts in it, the dipstick shows the minimum, it is basically reading 1 quart low.

Hmm, this is odd.

It is a 98 4.6 4r70w truck.

Now I know that a dipstick is not an accurate measuring device by any means, but would it be possible that someone put a larger pan or something on this unit?

It does not have an auxilarry oil filter mount, it is factory.

So, I put another .25 of a quart of oil in it, and come to a total of 6.25 quarts with new filter, and it still reads low.

I am leaving how it is until the next oil change unless you guys say otherwise.

5w30 mobil1 for those who are wondering.

JH

I just changed mine recently, also. My first "new" f150, a '98 SC 4x4 4.6L w/ same tranny. I put in 6 & noticed the same results; didn't really understand but everything seems okay.

One thing you have to remember. After you change out your oil and you crank it, you have to wait a couple of minutes for the oil to settle back into the oil pan to get a really true reading. A lot of oil will remain in the engine block if you stop the engine and immeadiately check the oil.

One thing I found was by reading the dipstick. It said on my Dad's Ranger that as long as the oil is between the marks or within the hash marks, it is ok. His always looks like it is about .5 qt. low even after any shop has done the change. I believe my '01 F150 says the same.

I have a 2000 F150 S/C 4x4 with the off road package. 6 quarts will only bring it up to the min. mark on my truck. Is there an external oil cooler or something that would cause it to need more oil than what the owners manual states? Thanks.

ford make diferent oil filter mounting base for the 4.6 some dont clear the crossmember and other it clear because the base is longer to the rear other has the option of remote filter mounted in front near the bumper I guess this is why some people put more oil to the engine (the longer base take more oil)

6 quarts is proper. It's only supposed to be BETWEEN the dots or in the crosshatch area, not at the very top.
