Gutless V10
I have a '99 F250 V10 5 speed and the truck is a gutless wonder. It has no power at all. I hear all you guys saying how you love your V10 but I sure don't. Is there something wrong with it? I've had in into service to be looked at and they say everything is fine. Would a chip help? If so, which brand?
Thanks,
Jay

What exactly leads you to say it's "gutless"? Are you towing or hauling some weight or just concerned about it's performance unloaded?
I thought mine was lackluster too until I hitched up my 6000lb trailer and saw the way it walked up interstate hills without breaking a sweat.

Don't expect a 4 ton truck to be a Ferrari just because it has a v10. Your power to weight ratio is all out of proportion. The v10 is loved so much because it doesn't seem to be phased will towing, like other v8s. Check out HeavyAssault's or v10klzz71's galleries if you want to know what kind of mods to do.
Gutless? After all the V8's and V6's I have owned most being GM I would not even began to call the V10 gutless. And with a manual, you must have something wrong with your truck. My V10 SD first off was bought for the fact of being a real truck, and not a car based wanna be. My friend has a Z71 with the 5.3 and want to "RACE ME".
For a moment there, I thought we owned trucks, not sports cars I told him. I would begin with taking it to a dealer if you have not, and have diagnostics run on it, a good start. But with all the power upgrades you can find for the V10 like going extreme and supercharging it or using a mild programmer/exhaust/filter upgrades, you should be able to find what you seek.

The thing has no power whether it's loaded or not. I have to drop it into 3rd gear to go up most highway grades and Ford insists that there is nothing wrong with it. It also pings heavily in 5th gear even with Premium fuel.

No power compared to what? Have you ever owned any other full size trucks? What you're not comprehending is the shear mass of Super Duty trucks. A truck that heavy with the aerodynamics of a fridge isn't exactly a rocket ship, nor should it be. Have you even tried the full sizers from the competitors. I have, and they stink. Not only are they "gutless" when unloaded, but they really bog down when towing.
Of course you have to downshift on grades, most cars do, too. It's not just the weight and size, but how the transmission is geared. Third gear in a v10 can be driven at a lot higher speed than third gear in a honda.

You obviously have something wrong with it such as clogged catylytic convertor or so . I have a 99 v10 5 speed and this thing runs like a raped ape. I do not have to downshift on hills in fifth gear a 40 mph. I can actually accelerate. I love this truck and the power it provides . When towing it still rocks
I understand it's a tank. I have driven other fullsize trucks. Even a little 4 cylinder Toyota can pass me on a hill. That's unloaded too. Every once and a while the truck will perform like I know it should, but that doesn't happen very often. Like I said earlier, I have taken it to Ford service and they insist nothing is wrong. Don't get me wrong, I like the truck, but I think I will go with diesel from now on. But one more question, is chipping it worth my money?

Not if it is running like you said it is. Like I said in a previous post, my V10 has tons of power in every range, from take off till top end. If this is a serious post, then you need to find another dealer to run some tests on your truck. A chip will not help if there are more serious problems.
Hey
I have driven them all, Ford stroker, dodge cummins, just bought a hemi, own a ford V 10, duramax. I run a steel yard and we have used them all for delivery trucks. I can tell you that my v-10 can make the same pull as the diesel but at a higher rpm. I can accelorate up hills. The v 10 is quicker off the line than the diesel ,which I like when driving empty. and the folks at mcdonalds do not ask me to turn off my truck to order. The diesel has low end torque like no other but it is far from quick. I used all of them at well over 15,000 pounds of steel on the trailer GVW of 27 to 28 thousand and while the milage is with in 2 to 4 miles per gallon of a diesel,no smell and no noise. the V-10 is a very enjoyable truck. If you are experiencing pinging and no power something is wrong. go to several mechs or go to another dealer. My truck shifts down when climbing a hill but I can floor it and get to what ever speed I want empty and hold my speed at around 3500 to 4000 rpm.
I use, and I like em all but the V-10 is very durable and fool proof.
My 2 cents.

Plugged Cat?
How do you check the cat for being plugged up? After putting on a Gibson cat-back mine doesn't sound any different and power isn't really any better. Could the cat be plugged up and how do I check it or who can do it?
