I got an 84' F150 not long ago and the gauges in the instrument cluster are all completely dead- they don't move a bit, although the lights in my cluster do work fine. Checked fuse which was good, pulled the panel and replaced the instrument voltage regulator, cleaned and checked all connections at the back of the panel - still nothing. Could this be a bad ground somewhere???
Yes, I did check that and I had 11.55 with the key on and 14.35 while idling going into the IVR. When I tried to measure the voltage coming out of the IVR my meter was bouncing all over the place both at idle and just turning the key on. ??
The needle bouncing around is correct for the IVR output.
I would take your meter and check the terminals for one guage. See if you have the bouncing voltage on the guage terminal. If you do, then see if you can determine the terminal that is hooked directly to the IVR. If you are sure of which terminal on the guage goes to the IVR, take a short piece of wire and ground the other terminal. This should make the guage move. You can check the oil, fuel and temp guages this way(not the amp guage though).
If they all seem to work, I would find the sending unit wires for each guage. The oil pressure sending unit is beside the oil filter on most engines, and the temp sending unit is on top of the intake manifold. These will have one wire going to them. Turn the key on, and ground this wire, and the guage should react as before. If it does, your sending unit is bad. You can also ground the wire going to the fuel tank sending unit and test it too.
