Do your own Repairs..

A NOTAURIOUS Taurus wagon? I had one until it caught fire and burned up from a power steering hose bursting. I actually liked it except for EVERYONE kept telling me the transmission would let go. I had put some Lucas oil treatment in it when I got the car as a "gift" from a customer, and I thought the trans was ready to go at any second. The Lucas oil fixed it right up, and I got two or three quiet years from the car.

Do your own Repairs..

I used to do nearly all my own repairs. It was not only that I could not find a competent and trustworthy mechanic, but also that I didn't have much money. As a result I screwed up my own vehicles for less money than it would cost to have a shop screw it up. Now I have a very good mechanic and trustworthy, but still weird things happen that don't add up--like hearing the weasel (thats what they call the kid that works for them) curse while under my hood and then a few minutes later the owner says they found a cracked thermostat housing--hmmmmm, hope the kid is not trying to cover up.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-May-02 AT 08:46 AM (EST)]Rocky, can you elaborate on how a burst power steering hose causes a fire? I am very curious.
My first car and only Chevy was a 55. The carb would flood and pour gasoline onto the exhaust manifold. I have actually watched it boil, thinking any minute it would burst into flames - but it never did. I finally got rid of it and never bought another one.

The power steering hose burst, spraying oil on the exhaust manifolds, resulting in a lot of smoke. My wife came to a stop, and got my grand-daughter out of the car. Passers-by came running with fire-extinguishers, lifted the hood, and when the air hit that oil it burst into a very hot fire. ATF fluid is some of the hardest material to put out. I've seen fires re-ignite after repeatedly being put out by the fire department. The hot metal just keeps re-igniting that stuff.

OK, Thanks for the explanation. I assumed it was hot oil, but didn't understand where the ignition would come from. I didn't realize that just opening the hood would cause enough oxygen to make it happen. Kind of like when I blow really hard on the hot coals in my wood heater in the winter to make the paper burst into flame.

I guess I am fortunate that my Chevy experience didn't do me in!

My sister spilled Rislone on her hot exhaust manifold and it burst into flames.

I am very fortunate in some respects. I don't have a vehicle to have repairs on anymore, and i own a ford so it doesn't see much time in the shop. I had my truck for a year and 1/2 and my clutch went, thats the only reason it was in the shop the whole time. I broke a rear shakle once but other than that it was fine. I am friendly with the owner of one shop...and my dad is snowmobiling buddies with a guy that owns another shop. So either place i go, i know i'm not gonna get ripped off. I give them referrals....they give me good service.

Primary rig is NOW TOTALLED :-X23 :
95' F-150 EB 300/6 5 spd with 4" Superlift, MSD, Ram Air, Gibson Exhaust, 32" BFG Muds
Some pictures in my gallery.

Then theres:
88' F-250 Superduty 351 + c6
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 and a
3 spd column shifter. Top speed, 65mph, Go Baby Go!

The newest addition to the Ford family is a 99' Mustang GT 4.6L
