It depends on what year you are talking about. For 2004 hp/trq:
Ford Chev
4.6 231/293 4.8 285/295
5.4 300/365 5.3 295/330

I found the '97 numbers on Kelly Blue book:
Ford
4.2 205/255
4.6 220/290
5.4 235/330
Chev
4.3 200/255
5.0 230/285
5.7 255/330

Too high? the 2001-2003 5.4L has 260hp and 350lb/ft of torque.
The 2004 5.4L now has 3 valves per cylinder and variable cam timing along with a drive-by-wire throttlebody. They now have 300hp and 365lb/ft of torque.

how do you get 3valves per cylinder, I understand how the mustang Cobra has 4valves, but 3, how do they get an odd number?

I would have thought that it would have 2 intakes and 1 exhaust. I always thought that it was harder to get the air in, not out.
