Wheelbase decisions
For utility purposes I think I would prefer the 8 foot bed (I occasionally haul lumber around in the box, and use a topper with a boat rack to actually carry small boats). Plus it's got a larger gas tank than the short bed. BUT my local dealers do not have the engine/options/color I want in a long bed (they do have in short bed).
Advantages to the short bed are thus (1) better maneuverability for parking and (2) it's in stock.
So now I am having trouble deciding.
The Shortbed is a little easier to manuver through parking lots but the longbed will probably handle better at highway speeds since vehicles with a longer wheelbase are usually more stable. I just ordered a 2000 250SD supercab 4x4 longbed. I will be hauling lumber and long stuff so it will be easier with the longbed. To me the shortbeds look more cool. Its truly a matter of utility, most people get the longbed to carry stuff which is what these trucks are truly ment for. If you don't expect to haul any long stuff, the shortbed is fine.

If you only have a few pieces, you can even leave the tailgate up and carry 8' stuff.. (Either it will fit diagionally, or it can also sit on top of the tailgate and sticks out the back about a foot.
If you have alot of 8' stuff to haul, then the tailgate will probably have to be down, but good anchor points are built in so you can safely secure the load..
I have the best of both worlds. A great truck that can haul, and also still fit into my garage..
The larger fuel tank would be nice but I have found that the older I get the more often I have to stop anyway. Being able to drive 400, 500, 600 miles without stopping are days gone by for me. If I stop, might as well buy fuel, if the price is right.
