No I'm not talking about my overweight behind, but at least on my Ranger I get the best traction and overall handling when there is an extra 50 to 100 lbs in the bed.
I was considering bolting some steel plate right above the axle mount on the bed of the truck, but under the bed - just tucked up in there. Enough to give it some weight, but not enough to stress the suspension.
I'd considered a truck canopy, but I hate driving with those things on, you can never see what's going on behind you, you can't toss things in the back as easy, and if I'm gonna get the canopy I might as well buy an Expedition or something.
I agree things ride nicer. Handling is better without weight and sans tailgate with mine. Traction is better in wet conditions with weight but in dry weather it is negligible. I prefer as little weight as possible for acceleration and fuel economy.
