On my 4.0L '96, there are two (approx. 1") hoses which go into the firewall near the top of the passenger side of the engine compartment. They are each about one foot long. At the end of these two hoses is the heater control valve. You can see a picture of mine below.

That is a helpful picture.

FWIW, technicially that thing is called a "Water Diverter Valve" in case the place you go to buy it has it listed under that name...

Thanks so much, zippy. That's exactly where I found the mineral deposits in my '96 4.0L. I'll leave the stopleak alone and just replace that.

Well, good that you foind your leak. Just be careful because my heater went first(about a week before i had to replace my heater control valve), then it wouldn't keep engine temperature(i.e. just below the C hash full time), then the engine almost went to overheat(creeping almost up to H) so if youre having heating problems your next problem could be you and your truck on the side of the road. I know for a fact(my truck is a 2.3L 1997, and my friend's is a 4.0L explorer 1995) that the valve is located in the same place and routed the same all around. Just be careful and dont hurt yourself on those clamps that Ford uses for the hoses. Also, just a note, that would probably be a good time to do yourself a radiator flush, if you have time...

Think I fixed 'My'roblem, had radiator hose blow on Friday night within site of my house, GOT LUCKY! It was the molded hose from the pump to the heater core. So Saturday got a ride to the checker, got 'all' new hoses; upper radiator, lower radiator and 5ft of 5/8" heater hose. I didn't realize that the blown hose was MOLDED until I went to replace it. I know I'm gonna have others railing at me but I cut the molded hose about an inch from the hole, pump side, and by passed my heater core for now. It's AZ if I want heat I'll roll down the window. Yes I used the old hose to close off the core. Since Sunday I haven't lost any fluid, and when Dec rolls around I'll get to check the core. Oh yeah I did a leak down check and it held 15psi for 5min, one of the replaced hoses had a bulge in it another a weak spot and at several of the clamps evidence of weeping.
