It's not too difficult. There are several hoses and wires to remove. Make sure you keep the spreaders (wierd looking washers) in the same place as they come out and torque them to 36-60 in/lb. I start in the middle at 36 and work to the ends. Then do it again at 60. If you have the tools and a good place to work, you should be able to get them off in about 30 minutes. Plan a little longer to get them back on, and replace the gaskets.
The question is how many times did your dads friend do them and how many times did you do them? Experience comes from repition and learning from your mistakes. You get quicker every time you do it. I think you will be surprised how quickly you can do it when you just dive right in without any fear in your head stopping you.
it wasnt fear. me my brother and my dad all replaced them.... and they would still end up leakin. mechanic friend did it and still no leak. moral to the story.... anything mechanical i can do, he can do it better.
