Question Chips Vs Engine Life

Ive heard that chips can bring out the full potential of a trucks engine and tranny performance but its also to my understanding that you can do the same with mods to both without putting in another computer gizmo that could go haywire.
Personally i beleive more in mods or just plain leave it alone.
Questions of the day are:
Would achip shorten the lifespan of the engine and transmission by making them perform differently than what they are designed to do?
Which is better, mods of both components or the chip?
Just things to ponder.

First, the chips don't make your vehical do things it wasn't designed to do. It just tunes your engine to run on higher octane fuel. Higher octane fuel burns slower so you can time it more aggresivly. The only reason factory's don't tune the engines for it is cause the fuel is more expensive. As far as which is better, most regular mods only benifit your upper mid to high RPM range. The diablo chip raises your entire curve giving you the most bang for your buck. But to really get your engine to its full potential you need the combo. First, improve mileage and mid to upper RPM's by uncorking the respritory system (catback exhast, K&N Intake, headers), then teach it some new tricks (diablo chip), then maybe top it off with some headers and an electric fan. Don't waste money on crap like throttle body spacers or under drive pulleys.
