Thumbs down Key broke.

Don't let friends drive your truck.

My friend broke the key off in the ignition.

I can start it with a screw driver or the other half of the key, but i'd really like to get that sucker out of there. I've tried prying at it with tooth pics but i can't get enough bite on it.

Do you guys have any secrets to getting a broken key out? I don't want to try to glue the other half in... seems too risky.

If i take the ignition switch out, will i be able to get it out that way? I'd sort of like to fix the little metal key shield anyways... the two pins in there were sheared off since i got the truck so it just spins free...

This is on a 1995 F-150...

I would take the lock cylinder out before it really breaks and you end up taking a hammer and chisel to it.
With Key

Disconnect the battery ground.

On tilt columns, remove the upper extension shroud by unsnapping the shroud from the retaining clip at the 9 o'clock position.

Remove the trim shroud halves.

Unplug the wire connector at the key warning switch.

Place the shift lever in PARK and turn the key to ON .

Place a 1/8in. (3mm) wire pin in the hole in the casting surrounding the lock cylinder and depress the retaining pin while pulling out on the cylinder.

When installing the cylinder, turn the lock cylinder to the RUN position and depress the retaining pin, then insert the lock cylinder into its housing in the flange casting. Assure that the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will allow the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder cast housing hole.

The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info for removing the lock cylinder.

I was out under the truck today, but instead of fixing the key, i got stuck replacing a u-joint and fixing a crappy seat bracket weld

I'll try to fix it tomorrow.

Thanks again, the information will be very useful.
