I have a '92 5.0 liter XLT. After having the truck for about 3 weeks, my daughter broke the sliding rear window. It's apparently an aftermarket and she broke the assembly the clip is attached to so there's no way to fix it. I can get a new one from JCW for about $100+ shipping or have a local place install one for ~160+tax. I'm kinda leaning toward paying the $60 to have the place do it. Does anyone have any opinions either way regarding doing this myself ?
TIA
Not a hard job to do, its a matter of removing the rubber moulding around the window to remove, and putting new moulding in for the new window. Some of the sliders come with a bracket kit that helps hold the window in, and I've seen ones that do not.
Basic tools and some patience, its a very doable job for the average person.
But then again, $60 is a more than reasonable price for the job, and I'd go that route just because I'd never get to putting the window in for several months
The experiences that I have had is it is easier to have the accessories place install it but if you choose to try it yourself it is not very hard to do. Take out your old glass, removing the inside trim first, peel the rubber back and push the glass out into the bed for someone to catch. Take the old rubber seal off the old window and wrap it around the new one, make sure it is in good shape. Put a string around the entire groove of the seal and spray the groove with WD 40. Have someone hold the glass up to the hole where the window goes from outside and you get inside. Start the top or bottom of the window into the hole and gently pull the string and the seal will pull to the inside of the window frame. This may take a couple of tries to get it but it works. Hope this helps.
For the price difference you're talking about, I would buy it local and have them install it. My experience with JC Whitney is that the price looks real attractive in the catalog but by the time you order it and they add on shipping and handling (which they overcharge for), the price isn't any better than anywhere else and then you have to wait 2 or 3 weeks for it to get there. I'm not a big fan of JC Whitney. There are probably better places to order that window from. Shipping on a back window is not going to be cheap no matter where you buy if from though.
thanks to all for the posts ! I agree about JCW, and have a feeling that shipping would be pretty high on a window..I'll try out the local place ...
On another note, last night I was down under the dash and found out my truck has a Clifford XL2000 alarm with some sort of proximity sensor. The PO of my truck never used the alarm at all in the 3 years he owned the truck. Luckily I see Clifford has the manuals on their web site. I think I'll replace the batterys in the remotes and see what happens !
