What is the "10k mod"? I've read about the 10k mod and I still can't figure out what it is. It seems to be one of the greatest things you can do to your Powerstroke. Can anyone shed some light on this?
A 10k ohm resistor is placed across the ICP sensor to fool the computer into thinking the injector oil pressure is lower than it is and IPR increases the oil pressure to the injectors. The increase in pressure allows the fuel to be injected at a slightly faster rate and is equivalent to advancing the timing. This "advance" increases combustion efficiency and helps increase power and fuel economy.
I have read in earlier post that this mod gives you about 20hp on a stock truck. Less, if you have a chip or tuner. I have the Superchips Microtuner (early version) and have noticed a considerable increase in performance with the addition of the 10k mod. My mileage has increased almost 1 mpg. The only negative effects are increased and slightly rougher idle. It can also produce more oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust emissions, but I don't feel this is a problem. I don't think the EPA is checking diesels for these emissions, yet.
Just installed the basic 10k mod today, heres what I think so far.
Idle does not seem effected at all, throttle is more responsive, there seems to be more power in the higher rpm range, meaning when I am doing 35 mph and get on it, she steps out a little quicker than before. Give me a week to post fuel mileage gains if any.
If I like the results, I'll do the relay off the go pedal and toggle switch.
