The extra stress of large tires loads the frame where the steering box mounts. Like the GM trucks, the Ford's frame will crack, but unlike the GM, no one we know of makes a patch kit. In a steering-related problem, the ram-style power-assist units have long been a sore spot for most Fords. The hoses and ram unit leak and are expensive to rebuild, so converting to later-style integral power steering is advised."
My question is how pricey will it be on a 1976 Ford F-150 to convert to a later style unit? If anyone has done this I will appreciate your help and advice greatly. Thank-you for your time.
I thought I would answer this. You have an F-150? The Ram assist(also known as power assist) was only on F-250 4x4's until 1977.5 never on F-150's. You should have full power steering. As far as the frame problem I have no idea other than to box the frame for more support in that area.
Sero 390,I recently did a power ram assist swap on my daughters 76 F-100 4x4.I swapped to a 79 integral power steering setup. Some of the 76 frames already have the threaded holes in the frame to accept the integral boxes. Then all you have to do is hook up the pump and you are good to go.These holes are on the outside of the framerail.just past the centerline if the front diff tube.If your's does not have the holes then send me your e-mail address and I will send you a download of the article I wrote on how to power steer a 76 and earlier F-100 4x4.
