Question Truck Bed Problem!

I have a 1981 f250 with a 351. The problem I have is the bed...if you stand away from it and look at the back the bed looks like it is leaning to the left side even on level ground. I dont know what the problem is or how to fix it! If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

your left spring could be weak since you have to carry the driver and the gas tank on that side.

Mine seemed to always do that. I thought it was just an illusion though.

Rusted out bed mounts?

Or sloppy bent frame repair?

Bowed springs?

Park it on a level spot and start measuring fom the ground to the frame and bed in several spots on both sides to see where you are actually are low.

Mine does the same thing. It only happened after I got a new (actually used) set of springs for the driver's side. I want to maybe get new springs this year. I guess we'll see.

Check the frame under the rear of the cab for cracks, the 80-81 trucks had the swiss cheese frames. I have been told that this standard stress crack in the frame will often manifest itself as a crooked bed.

check your cab to box body lines see how they flow together. my truck does that and the body mount is gone easy fix. try to grab the bottom of the box and see if it moves also with a buddy try with the cab look under while moving, also check all four corners of bed ie look from right side passenger corner across to the driver front corner to see if the bed is strait and level. if ok then check cab see how the doors close if they drop hopefully your door pins are good. if frame as bad consider a newer style frame ie up yo 1996 or 7 and down good luck .

the 80-81 frames were weak.
F250 frames are stronger, but still weak compared to other years.

they wouldn't stay strait when they were new and 24 years work hasn't helped them any.

My 81 f150 became a parts truck

yup, the frame collapses just behind the cab at one of the lightening holes.

You probably checked this and it may be obvious but.... Check the rear hanger on the leaf spring...they usually rot out before the front part and will make the bed sag on that side.

i have the same problem. My frame cracked under one of those holes right behind the cab. I had it welded good as new. Its just that the cab and the bed line dont line up now, it is very annoying. Im going to put something under there to line them up. I suppose it could be the springs also cause the drivers side one sags a bit. who knows

try getting new suspension for the whole back axle, but on the drivers side get something a little more resistant, or adjust it to match so it doesn't lean now or in the future, make sure it is a good grade spring cause you gonna be hauling stuff, you dont want it to crap out (although it would take a lot of stuff to do that)...
