The head unit/controller component of my radio seems to have only intermittent contact with the player/disc changer component.* As of now, it's mostly out and I can't play any CDs. (It's my understanding it's all one piece, but correct me if I'm wrong.) I'm fairly handy, so I'd like to fiddle with it myself, but was hoping someone could tell me how to remove it. (screws, tabs, etc. to the molding/dash) so I didn't have to buy a service manual. I can take it to BestBuy and get a new stereo installed for $200 and be done with it, but if I have the dealer troubleshoot the factory radio, I can see paying way more than that to fix it and I wouldn't be as confident in it as a brand new unit. I won't miss the 6 disc changer at all.
*Symptoms: stops playing in the middle of a song and none of the buttons work...shows either all slots loaded with only one CD in it or no sloats loaded with one or more definitely in it...occasional "clicking sound" like a motor/servo is skipping gears...
If you look at the radio, there are (2) small holes on each side. There is a tool that is basically a stiff wire bent in a u shape. Two tools are inserted into the holes and it releases the radio and you should be able to pull it straight out. (You can buy the tools, but I just made some out of a coat hanger).
Take a strong wire hanger to make 2 tools. Push them into the holes firmly about an inch and a half, and push the hangers toward the outside of the radio(away from each other) and pull toward you at the same time. There is a tab on each side that snaps on the outer dash piece that needs to be pushed toward the radio to release it. I just did this last night to see what I was working with before the aftermarket stuff goes in. What are you putting in your X?

Thanks, guys. Figured those holes were something. Any anti-theft concerns with monkeying with it?
Nothing fancy. I have an Alpine CDM-9803(?) that was briefly in the Tahoe I traded in. I've been meaning to put it on eBay, but would rather throw it into the X than pay for a new factory radio to be installed.
There shouldn't be anything to worry about theft wise...i recommend you get a wire harness rather than cut the OEM wires and you will need an install kit unless you have a double DIN (twice normal size) radio to go in to fill the hole.
Did the factory radio quit working?
