I am trying to change the ball joints in a '90 F-150 4X4. The problem we are having is, how do you get the nut off the bottom ball joint? I don't see any way to get a wrench on it. Is there something I need to know?
I did them on my F-250 2WD and had no problems. 4X4 seems more complicated, could use some input.
On the TTB Fords (Broncos, BII, Rangers, F-###, Aerostar AWD) the only way to do the ball joints is to remove everything including the axle shafts and tierods. Then you have a clean shot at everything and can use a ball joint press to easily take them out and press them in.
The balljoint press from Autozone is not an exact fit, but, with a large impact socket, it works just fine. I bought a kit from KD tools for about $140 and it works fine and can be used with an impact wrench. Actually, I have used an impact wrench on the Autozone one too ;-)
It is the axle shaft that I guess was in the way. Do you have to take the cover off the front diff to get the axle shaft out? If that is the case, I may leave this one to the pros. But I have been known to dive in anyway.
Nope, you don't have to remove the diff to pull the axles out. The driver side just pulls straight out, and on the passenger side, you have to cut the clamp on the rubber boot (about 10" from the diff) and then pull the axle out of there.
I used an electric impact on the Autozone puller.
