Hey all, I'm in the market for my FIRST full size weekend wheeler ever! That's right folks, 18 years old and never owned a full size truck...sounds sad I know but everyone must start sometime right? I live in a rural town with a lot of mud and flat orchards, a.ka. the stomping grounds. I know bigger is better when it comes to drivetrain components, but on the property where my friends frequently wheel, there are deep canals with steep walls, and last weekend I watched a guy crush the underside of the bed on his 00' longbed Chevy 4x4 single cab, so I know I want a shortbed truck...atleast for now. Not to mention as well that everyone and their grandma has a 73-87 Chevy half or three quarter ton truck.
My Dad has owned and driven everything and he likes Ford the best and there must a be a reason for that so here's what I've found:
A friend and I were shooting the breeze this weekend and he happened to mention his father had a 76 F150 out behind their house, so I decided to to take a look... A red 1976 F-150 4 speed, 390 with under 5000 miles on the motor and headers, with a brand new carb sat up to the doors in weeds.
We put a battery in it, took the air cleaner off, put some gas in the carb and it fired up on the first try. I believe it was lifted 4 inches and had some very worn 33'' BFG A/T KO's on it. I also noticed dual tanks. It has a camper shell to match the red paint as well. The only body damage I can see is some light scraping by the tail light on the passenger side. It sounds like a great buy so far, the only thing that doesn't work is the parking brake....all the gauges functioned, as well as the lights and windshield wipers.
The registration hasnt been paid for four years, which is likely the last time it was driven! You're probably thinking " How much?". Well that friend of mine told me everyone tells his Dad that they want it, and no one brings a cash offer, so it continues to sit, but his friend believes it can be had for 1,000 cash. I will try to get pictures of the truck up and I will take various shots to give a better all-around feel. Any helpful guidance/direction will be good. Thank-you
if that trucks got a 390, with less than 5,000 miles on it and headers and runs well with a new carb, 4x4 minimal body damage, lifted, it hink for 1,000 cash id be going to the bank quick like, id be after that truck for whats under the hood, good luck and tell us if you end up getting it or not
Thanks for the advice, I'm already saving away...any additional comments on anything truck related would be great. I like the 73-79 years, but what about running gear? can the standard half ton running gear (Ford 9-inch?) handle the stress/horsepower of the motor? I know driving around town isnt that bad, but what about when I've got my foot in it in first gear in the mud or up the canal wall for that matter? Thanks
Hey all, just updating the thread...I'm going to post pictures of this potential new rig tomorrow, I hope they turn out all right. Any areas of interest besides the main ones I should pay attention to? Thanks
