Been about six years since I did one. I sort of remember having to remove the tray from the rear storage compartment at the floor and removing the front cassette/coin tray to get at the screws. It mounts onto little tabs sticking up from the floor.
The console is mounted with four nuts that attach through two plates to four studs on the transmission tunnel. I concur with recobardo that you must access these from the inside of the console. Remove the tray from the back AND the "fuzzy" container from the top. Both are retained with plastic "tabs" that allow you to gently squeeze the sides of each and remove them. I can't remember the exact size of the nuts, but I do seem to recall them being metric... Small hands were a big help here... The coin tray can't come out until the garage-door-opener-holder comes out which can't come out until the console comes out... You get the idea...
BTW, I know this fairly well because I've removed (and reinstalled) the consoles from a '93 AND a '97. I'm a stormchaser and install radio/computer gear on the hump using the four console studs.
