I got 99 5.4 f 150 with 130 miles and when i put on 4 wheel high ( I mean on the snow road wet pavement etc.) there is more noise coming from the front (the noise sound like driving bad bearing or having off road tires on asphalt payvement). It becomes a bit louder when steping off the gas. There is no problem in 2wd. Does it mean I have diffrential or transfer case problem?
It actually sounds to me like you're trying to drive in 4wd on a surface that is not slippery enough for the tires to slip and remove the drivetrain bind. General rule about 4wd is only use it when you are on a surface where your rear tires are losing traction in 2wd. Wet pavement isn't a good surface for 4wd.
The sound you are hearing could be a blown front hub. Usually the hubs will go before the transfer case does, especially if they are auto hubs.
hey droff i am having the same problem with my 95 250.mine to gets louder when steping off the gas and its real loud!..let me know if you find anything out.Im trying to get a buddy of mine to check it out for me soon.if i find anything out ill let you know..im also getting bouncing from the front right side and its not my shocks there new.when im in 2 wd i only hear it very little.my hubs are manual what about yours?Someone told me it could be u joints too ack!I hope its just the hub!

I have this same problem with my '95 F 150, no noise in 2wd, but when in 4wd, a noise that sounds like what you described droff, sounded like a bearing or something, it also got louder when I stepped off the gas. I thought it was either hubs or U-joint, I even felt a vibration in the pedal and the floor, so I took it to the shop, and they said nothing wrong with it, told me it was a pickup and it will make noise. Hope this helps, as i did not need to worry about anything (or spend any money fixing things.)

F-150 is a very quiet truck, so I do not buy that. If it is a thump noise, on most trucks, especially Explorers, a sway bar link has broken. Very easy to see from the front of the truck as long as you can get under there. Find where the sway bar attaches and there should be a vertical piece of PLASTIC at the very end of the U part of the bar. When they break, they snap in half and flop around, so the bar ends up hitting stuff when it travels up and down and causes the thump.

Hey, I was thinking about this some more, I wonder if you have a totally blown bad shock? How do your tries look at the tread? Big digs in the middle of the tread and shoulders?
no its nothing to do with the tires or shocks they are fine.ITS SOMETHING WITH THE 4 WD!droff where thet heck are you?????what did they tell you was wrong??????????
