Pulled the boat over the weekend. It weighs around 5000 lbs. loaded. I went further than normal and yanked it around 65-70 mph. When accelerating pretty steady, I heard what I believe the wastegate blowing off some pressure. It sounded like if was right at the firewall and made a stuttering/hissing type sound......sort of like a rattle snake. I was pulling with my tuner in the lower setting (SCMT 60hp mode.) Just for info, I run a 4" turbo back exhaust and the AIS intake. I assume I am getting plenty of air flow. I never noticed this before when I go to the local ramp, but when I get it out on the highway I get this. The last time it happened, I got a code....can't remember which one, but it was the one that said fuel over/under specified range. I cleared the code and never saw it again. What's the dang deal here. I am really losing faith in my "tuned up" diesel. I am considering throwing the SCMT to the scrap pile and just run stock. HELP!
It's nearly impossible to actually hear the wastegate open, when operating properly it is almost always open. A malfunctioning wastegate might set a P1690 code.
Your description sounds more like surge/stall than an actual malfunction. Read up on some of the compressor surge threads and see if anything rings a bell.
Don't lose hope...once you get your "tune-up" dialed in it really is worth the effort. Some PSD's just seem to suffer more growing pains than others.
