I tried to change my fuel filter today. I used the fuel line tool to remove the outlet tube, but I could not get the inlet side to disengage. I never did here the "click".
Also, I could not figure out how to get the filter itself out of the clamp that holds it in. It looks like I need to slide it out forwards or backwards, but I could not get it to move more than about 1/2 inch either direction. Am I missing something? Tell me there is a trick that makes it very easy.
You have to remove the bracket that holds it in. It is a major pain but it is do-able. There is a lip on the filter that fits in a slot on the bracket, if I remeber correct the bracket is spring loaded so you really have to work at it.
Did you get the filter changed yet?
To get the "fingers" to release you should push the line towards the filter while pushing the tool into the line. I always spray some WD40 into the end of the line before I start to help clean out the "fingers" so they release easier.
Usually the filter will slide out the one end of the bracket or you can just pry it up and out.
I just did this to my truck. Not as easy as my mustang, but it can be done. I found that the anodized fuel tool made it a lot easier than using the cheap plastic ones. Also, it looked like the original filter (paint markings on outside, but not on inside). Scary! But it seems to run fine, even before the change.
I changed mine yesterday. I pushed the metal tool away from the filter towards the fuel line and pulled the lines off. It was quite simple. I then pushed the filter up and it slid out of the bracket.
Being i'm a pipefitter by trade,I made a fuel filter bracket spreader for mine. Its a bolt with a angle clip on each end, notched just enough to grab the bracket. I crank the bolt onto the nut on the opposite angle clip,it spreads the bracket and I slide the filter out.If I had a digital camera ide post it.
What does this tool look like? I was going to napa today to get a fuel filter for my 99F150 5.4L. All the fuel filters I've changed, I've been able to remove the clips with a small screwdriver. Will this work with this truck?
A picture of the tool is shown below. This was the first fuel filter that I ever installed, but I can not imagine that it could have been accomplished without this, or a similar, tool.
You will use the smaller diameter end on your truck.
By the way, I did not take this picture. It was included in an article on another website by a user named "FordMan". I do not know his real name so I can properly give credit.
