Question Convert to 4X4

I have a 1970 F-100 with a 360 and a C6 tranny. It doesn't have 4 wheel drive and I want to convert it to one. What do I need to do to accomplish this?

Well for one thing you better be good at fabricating and have alot of spare time on your hands. There is alot more than just adding a transfercase and front axle then go wheeling. It would be much easier to just put that body on a 4X4 chassis. Use the search function this has been discusses MANY times.

I'm actually doing this converison on my '72 right now. I'm maybe a little more than halfway done, at least its on 4 wheels and rolling right now.

I started with a 1979 F-150 as a doner truck that had everything I needed on it. Looking back, maybe it would have been a little eaiser to just swap bodies, but that just wasn't something I wanted to do, so I did the axle swap.

Some of the major things you have to do is hack the crap outta the engine crossmember, it hangs down WAY too low on these models, i've got maybe 10 inches total lift on the front and I thinks its enough for the axle to not his the crossmember now. Move the steering box from behind the axle to the front and make all new steering linkage. I had to totally take out the crossmember where the radius arm brackets are mounted and mount the 4x4 brackets back from there, actually got to share a hole with my tranny crossmember to line them up evenly. I used the '72 2x4 upper spring buckets, cut them off and moved them down 2 inches and foreward 2 inches, then rewelded them.

Thats just a short list of the major stuff, and i'm not even finished yet. To tell the truth it would be much eaiser to sell your 2x4 and buy another 4x4, or buy a 4x4 with a rusted up body and swap yours onto it. But if your dead set on keeping your body and frame like I was, then its very possible to do, just lots of work involved. Since I am doing this right now, feel free to ask any questions and i'll try and answer them the best I can.
