I own an 83' F250 with the 6.9L diesel engine. The other day I was driving down the road, and it just died on me. I noticed the fuel gage showed a 1/4 tank left, but knew the gauge was faulty at times, so I switched to the rear tank, purged the air from the lines using the valve on the fuel filter, then tried restarting, nothing, wouldnt fire. I also noticed a burning smell when I stopped, kind of like and electrical fire. Just last night, I noticed a wire had indeed melted in two on the passenger side engine compartment. Upon following the wire around, I noticed it went to a connector that connects to the top of the injection pump. I remember reading in the haynes manual that it might be the shutoff switch for the injection pump. I pulled a couple high pressure lines off the injector to see if any fuel was being pumped from the injection pump, and not a drop came out. I am pretty sure that wire that melted has something to do with the injection pump, but cant figure out what its purpose is, and how to correct the problem. I tried touching the two ends together that melted, nothing. I noticed the wire comes from a connector that has the power wires that go to the glow plugs, and also noticed that the wire just makes a complete circle, ending at the injection pump. Also, the wire, which is red with greens lines on it, goes to a little box on the front grill, behind the head light, on the passenger side. Im not sure what it is, or if that might have been damaged due to the short. Another wire that is on that same line going to the pump, connects to a wire that ties into the fuel line that connects to the fuel filter housing. Again, I think that is some kind of fuel shut off wire. Does the pump have a coil of some sort that shuts off fuel? Could the pump not be bad, or can I get it working buy somehow fixing that burnt wire? Any and all help into this matter is greatly appreciated. I am without my truck right now, and really need to get it fixed. I am hoping it is a simple fix. I dont think the pump went bad, it just wont pump fuel due to that wire being melted. Thanks again
Run a wire from the + on the batt to the conection on the front of the injection pump, thats the fuel shut of sol,if it fires up the you will have to find the short that burned the wire and repair it.It can be a pita to trace shorts, take your time so you dont overlook anything.Sounds like the casing on that wire is coming in contact with metal somewhere, maybe someone else here has ran into the same prob and can give you a probable place to look.Good luck.
Thank you so much for your help. I will give that a try. Now, if I dont hear a clicking sound from the solenoid, and the engine wont start, does that mean the solenoid is shot, and I need to get a new injector pump?
usually the pump is only serviced as a unit , but you may be able to get just the solenoid cover from a diesel shop. otherwise yes you need to replace the pump.
