Question Transmission fluid

I have a 1999 4X4 Expedition with 5.4 engine.
I need to know what kind of fluid to use when I flush the transmission. I called the local ford house to enquire about the cost of the job and they gave me two prices. One price if I have synthetic fluid and another price if non- synthetic. How do I know which kind I have?

It should say on the dipstick which kind to use. It will say Mercon or Mercon V. Mercon V is synthetic.

I just switched my 99 over to mobile 1 synthetic last year. Just make sure that if you switch to synthetic it is Mercon rated and not Mercon V. I changed all the fluids over to synthetic. I checked around and a lot of others have changed over to synthetic. Its realy more of a personal choice since the synthetics cost more. Hope this helps.

I had my local Ford shop replace the trans fluid and filter a couple thousand miles ago at 70,000. They quoted me two prices also $150 for fluid and filter or $250 to include a flush with that. I opted for the lower of the two and just had them do a fluid and filter. I was not sure if the flush was needed and I put alot of cash into my expo in regular maintenence (tires, brakes, Bilstein shocks, serpentine belt, etc.....) in the short year that I had it and took the cheaper route. I once had a gasket go in my 00 Grand Am and antifreeze mixed with oil in my engine and had the motor flushed by the dealer with the repair. Is a flush needed on a normal tranny job or is a fluid and filter all that is needed?

Synthetic Oils

I am about to make the change to synthetic fluids in my Expo. Does anyone have any suggestions or reccomondations on where to get the best price. I'm still on the fence on what brand I'll get.

Located in So. Cal., but I don't mind ordering if I can get a better price....

Thanks...

You should need Mercon, which is not synthetic. I've never seen Mercon V listed as a synthetic, but have seen it as a blend. Some tranny fluids claim to conform to both Mercon and Mercon V specs. All I know is I certainly stick with what Ford (not the stealership) recommends.

Take a look at this thread for a lot of discussion.

I did it myself, drained the torque converter and dropped the pan. It took 15 1/2 qts of Mobil 1 (which is Mercon) synthetic and a new filter. Doing it yourself w/syhthetic will be expensive (about $100 (16 qts ATF and a filter)), having someone else do it will be even more. It certainly cleared up the shudder I was feeling (common Ford trait w/old ATF) and the Mobil 1 syn should help hold the temp down some when towing our camper.

Sounds like there are good arguments for either dino or synthetic.
I will probably just let the dealership do it and replace with OEM fluid.
Thanks for all the comments.

I think you just made the right choice. But make sure they put exactly what the dipstick says it should take. They have been known to put the wrong fluid in many times. It would be a good idea to look at the dipstick first yourself so you can tell them what you want instead of trusting them to do the right thing.

Go with the Redline ATF in tranny and 75/90 in the diffs.
