I have a 99 f350 4x4 v10 dually w/auto tranmission. For some reason and is not often my transmission will hold 1st gear and BANGS into second gear. I took the truck to the dealership in 4 different times and they can not duplicate the problem. When this happens I have to stop the truck put it in parking wait 10 seconds and they put it in drive. it works all the time. Another thing when it happens the RPM works but the speedometer doesn't. Any suggestions! I only have 47000 miles in it. Thank you.
OK! but what about the tranny? Does any body ever experience the same problems. It only happens when you start moving or when you go from reverse to drive. It holds first gear bangs into second with a big "kick" then is when I have to stop the truck put it in parking, wait 10 seconds and then pu it in drive. Like I said before if happens ones every 4 or 5 months. The speedometer only stop working when the transmission hold gears other than that it works fine.
Your vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is acting up. You see, your tranny needs the vehicle speed input to determine shift points & shift speed. When the VSS doesn't send the correct signal you get the symptoms that you are experiencing.
It could be bad or there could be "crud" in the rear axle. I'd pull it and inspect it for excessive metal shavings.
If it's clean, just replace it to be safe. If it is dirty with shvings and stuff, consider replacing the rear diff fluid AND the VSS.
Also, as noted before, check the condition of the wires and the contacts.
