C6 conversion

Got my C6 last week, it's in the garage. Engine comes home tomorrow. On connecting that C6 to my block, no problem. But what else is there to figure in? Any electric necessities? Also, what is the refill protocol? The torque converter and tranny are drained right now. Thanks. Jim

No electric that I recall. Unless you had some tranny mounted nuetral position sensor or reverse light switch (those should be on the coumn).

Vacuum line
Kick down linkage
Shift Linkage
Tranny cooler plumbing

The Torque Convert must be installed correctly on the transmission before attaching to the engine/flexplate! This is a very important deal. I learned the hard way. Just getting the shaft splines lined up is not good enough.

I'm not sure I can describe it weel. But, you should put the TC on the transmission shaft, spin slowly until it settles onto the pump gear assembly. I think you will feel it settle twice. if this is not done right and you install the tranny, you get to rebuild it later...personal experience.

I did not make any effort to fill the TC before installing. I just took my time fillling it from the fill tube, running in park and repeatedly checking the fluid.

Hopefully somebody will explain it better.

put a quart or two of ATF in the torque converter before installing

Double check to make sure that the pilot is out of the crank.

shift linkage

Did you have any trouble hooking the shift linkage up? What transmission did you have before the c6 swap? I just replaced the fmx with a c6 and I am having trouble hooking the shift linkage up.

C6 conversion

I was running a 4speed before the C6. I just got my engine together, and will bolt the tranny on this weekend. My plan is to run a floor shift like Hurst or something, since I'm lazy.

From what I heard you also need to shorten the drive line if going from a manual to an automatic.

front yoke

that's totally true James. The 4-speed has a rear yoke, the C6 has a spline. These trucks are so old I'm not going to look for a factory front driveshaft, there's a great driveline company here in Albuquerque and I'll just have them customize my old one. My plan for cooling lines is to run an auxiliary cooler in front of my radiator. One thing I totally can't find is the downshift linkage arm. Do any of you Ford guys know how to tame that problem? Thanks. Jim

I am planning on replacing my 3 speed/302 with a c6/351w out of my 79 e150 van (how I knew about the shortened drive line, I already asked earlier , it already has the kickdown rod. Seems like you could make one easily enough, just need some metal rod that you can bend into the shape you need, but hold the shape during normal driving conditions.

kickdown linkage

thanks James. I thought of that. Can you email me or post the length of that rod? Over-over, long point to long point? Jim

There is a company called LOKAR that makes a slick cable style replacement for the the kickdown rod, I order them through Advanced Auto Parts. I have used them on all of my 460/ C6 conversions, they are fully adjustable so you can get the kickdown to work on heavy or mild pedal.

what a kidder

Mark, let me just say this. I have the crossmember, a good drillgun, and a torch. I believe I can bolt it in, but I'm prepared to wrestle if it gets stubborn. After all, it is a Ford.

excellent backup

Paul, that's a tremendous solution you just gave me on that linkage. That was my last issue, the rest is figured out and ready to go. I'm going to run a B&M Shifter, floor mount, cable operation. Kind of pricey, $210, but it's a solution and it works. Oh, I just bought a new Edelbrock, 600cfm, vacuum secondary, (AFB in other words) new equipment only $234. Summit Racing, not in the catalog. If anyone wants the part number, shoot me a line.

ALL DEPENDS ON THE YEAR.MY BROTHER HAD TO GO TO THE JUNKYARD AND STILL COULDN'T FIND ONE . YOUR BEST BET IS TO DO WHAT HE DID AND FIND ONE LONG ENOUGH AND HAVE A TRANNY SHOP BEND IT TO FIT.IF YOUR TRUCK IS AFTER 80'S A FORD DELERSHIP SHOULD CARRY IT OR BE ABLE TO GET ONE IN REASONABLE TIME
