Anyone have any ideas how to seal up a leaky oil pan on an 89 F350 with a 460? I have tried JB weld not working that well though. I am trying to avoid hoisting the engine to put in a new oil pan, its a job and a half for a $65 oil pan!!!!! Why didnt ford make these things with a non-rusting material like everyone else?????? I know, $$$$$$$.
thanks
I had a '93 with a 302 so I don't know if this applies for sure. The manual called for pulling the engine to replace the oil pan gasket. I didn't know that at the time and managed to replace it without doing that (twice actually, long story). I didn't even have it off of the ground. Still on the ground, it was a horrible experience, under the conditions I was doing it, but it can be done.
He's talking about replacing the whole pan, not just the gasket. You don't need to pull the motor to replace the gasket, but you definately do to replace the pan.
to replace the oil pan, you only have to jack the engine up a bit so you can get it out.
if its leaking, it might be the oil pan gasket, they occasionally rot or blow out.
If there is a bad rusted spot on the pan, replace it.
Be less troubles in the long run.
To succesfully jb weld it anyways. it would be better to pull it and drain the oil to get hte best bond possibal after cleaning the area with soap and water and alcholol.
^ what truck did you do? Replacing the gasket is possible without moving the engine, but with the space we had to work with, there was no way the pan was going to come out without lifting the engine.
yea, you can replace the gasket with the pan in, and the engine not raised. but its really hard to do. Be much easier to jack the engine up high enoug to remove the pan and clean the seal off properly. and make sure its installed properly.
problem with slipping in is it might not be aligned properly.
to remove the pan, you have to lift the engnie on the v8 atleast. i duno about the i6
you cant replace the pan without lifting the engine, it wont come out, if it does, it would be incrediably hard. and you'd probably have to jam it in there, and jam it out.
to seal it with anything, your going to have to clean the surface really well.
why dont you just drain the oil out adn weld on a piece of metal.
might help if you tell us where at the pan is leaking.
On a older 300 6-cylinder I pulled all the pan bolts, dropped the pan and reached in and unbolted the oil pump. Once that was loose then the pan slide right out. Did the reverse to put it on. Not much room for your hand. Be sure you can get the bolts started to replace it.
Hi...J B weld makes Water Weld..Its like putty clean the outside mix it mash into hole and sides it will seal in with the oil Hence the name Water weld..I've used it ITS good stuff...It will seal gas, oil, and water it will also seal in water.....If you can't find it...I'll look around here for you...Did you use fast set J B ??Good luck...John
cbeaur please note this part of my 1st post "it was a horrible experience". Also remember that, as I said in my first post that it was a 302 not a 460. I neglected to tell you in the first post that it was a V8. To me it's one of those jobs that is worth paying for if you have the money to spend. I didn't at the time. Truthfully, it has been 5 or 6 years since I did it, but all I did was drop the pan and I was able to work it out. I did not have a manual to look at or any special tools, I didn't know it couldn't be done, so I just went out and did it, and I am no mechanical genius.
I have not ever, nor am I saying now that it will work on a 460. I did MY '93 XLT 4X4 with a V8 302. I find it odd that there are folks who want to tell me that I can't do or didn't do what I know I've done!
Oh Well, on a lighter note
Now I'm enjoying my new '04 XLT

Need to replace a leaky oil pan gasket on my V8 302. Apparantly it can be done without hoisting the engine, but is a real pain in the ***. Anyone have experience doing this?
