Turbo problems, maybe blown?

Punched it hard passing a little old lady who wouldn't let me pass behind her ( filled her car up with black smoke on the way past ) Immeadiately after the engine was making a loud whining noise, similar to that of a power steering pump low on fluid, but louder. Noise soon diminished to only while lifting off the throtle. When the truck is in park, there is now noticeable errant sounds while in the cab when reving the engine. Once in gear, and the engine is warm, the sound occurs only when I left off the throtle. Now on take off, there is definately blue smoke from the exhaust, and when I just came home, there was a cloud of smoke when I stopped. While driving at 70, the boost is at 3-4 psi, and the engine sounds and seems to run fine. All fluids are full, no cross contamination yet, but am keeping an eye open.

What are the my first items to look at? All turbo hoses and lines are tight. Desperate for some help on this.

Have you lost any power? Does it smoke black? With the engine OFF and the key OFF, try to open up the intake side of the turbocharger. Look in there and see if there is anything to be seen. Grab hold of the shaft on the compressor wheel and try to shake it up and down and in and out. If you can feel anything moving that way, you may have taken out the bearing. If you see nothing there, take apart the exhaust side of the turbo and do the same thingj with the engine OFF. If there is nothing there, you might want to check the motor mounts ... the grinding you heard may have been the fan hitting the shroud, matter of fact, check this first, then go to earlier stuff. Hope this helps ya out.

A little power los. Smokes blue only, but I'm afraid of getting on it. Engine sounds fine today after topping off yesterday with a qt of synth oil, but smokes really bad. Runs fine / same at 70 mph. Going to check all in the am.

Thanks

I would go to the downpipe first. When you split the downpipe from the turbo it will be soot black and nasty in there, but should be dry. If oil is present in the downpipe the seal on the turbo is blown.

Stock rebuild kit runs about $50. The part number is 7-a-2530 from www.turbointernational.com

I thought a re-build was something a machine shop had to do. What tools do I need for this? The link is great, by the way Cookie

Thanks

Well, if you are planning on having the turbo balanced afterwards, then it would certainly be easier to just let them do the whole thing.

There are no special tools required, just a good selection of metric sockets, universals, wrenches, and maybe a BFH.

"Big Hammer" Oh I get it. Sorry
Guess I'll need that kit too while I'm at it.

Wait till you get a load of the pics I've taken. There is oil all over the compressor side of the turbo externally. I have a question though. At the y pipe, do you remove i completely from the intake manifold, or just disconnect it from the turbo?

I am interested in your pics. I have oil on the intake of my PSD and might need some help.

I should post them this weekend, unless I get a little etra time tonight. How much oil do you have? A little puddle? Can you reach in a feel the wheel. It shouldn;t have any play in it. Did you notice this recently for any particular reason, like after driving it hard, or gradually over time? How many miles?

It is easier to get the turbo out if the manifold is completely removed, but it will fit around it with a bit of wrestling.

I tore it all the way down. I had to soak the exhaust inlet v-clamp down overnight to remove the turbo. Next day, the clamp litterally popped off. I got a re-man from Diesel Power in Miami for $650 with a 6 mos warranty. I was a little confused about the pedastel. I assumed it was what I have now been told is where the Turbo mounts to the manifold. There are two o-rings there and one on the oil riser shaft. I was told the pedastel was where the back of the Turbo bolts to the exhaust inlet y tube, and that has no gasket. The re-man turbo did NOT come with the o-rings, and I am not having good luck finding high temp rings this weekend. Also Ford wants an arm and a leg for them and 5 day lead time. Hopefully I can get them Monday, unless I am missing something. I want to thank you and everyone for the help. You really know your stuff when it comes to these turbos. For Christmas, I think I am buying myself a ballbearing turbo, and upgraded injectors.

I bought a set of the "O"rings, lower pedestal and upper pedestal (turbo mount) for about $13.00 for both sets.

Ford "O" ring Kits small #F4TZ-6N653-A, Large "O" Ring KitF4TZ-6N653-B

I also gutted and plugged the EBPV while I had it torn down.

I also replaced the stock pedestal with a non-EBPV type pedestal. About $230.00.

What else can you tell me about the o-rings? Since I didn't pull apart the upper pedestal, I'm now at a loss as to what goes between the pedestal and the turbo. The lowers I have pics of. Also, what torque to tighten the pedestal bolts down, and is there a sequnce? I want to do the same on the EBPV. How did you plug it, and what did you go to gut it?
