I like the truck overall. It really is nice looking and the rest I've gotten used to or like. It drives pretty well when not towing and I like the new tranny a little better than the allison. But the motor has just dragged this truck down.
I've had every re-flash and it's only made it louder. One of them did make the cold start a little better, though. Otherwise, I really can't say any of them changed much about the way the truck runs.
I've had 2 turbo acctuators, 1 EGR valve, 2 oil leaks, a replacement turbo, wiring harness gremlins, a FICM replaced, plus assorted non-motor related problems. I've actually only been driving the truck since early November as a broken hip two days after buying it kept it parked for quite a while.
For a long time, I've been saying I figured I got one of the good motors compared to some of the other horror stories I read here and elsewhere. No more, though. Once the turbo went, so did that opinion. I don't even put my stuff like binocs and cameras back into the truck between service calls anymore. It's just not worth putting it all back when I know I'll have to pull it back out next week for my next appt.
Originally posted by thenrich Since I was the first 1 to respond to this thread I think it turned out 'OK'. Just remember folks - most sales guys are out to sell trucks and some of them try and do it by cutting down other brands. I think it's more a personal desicion on what you want. If I'd had to deal with the same saleman that Toreador_Diesel did - I'd prolly been a little aggrevated also. It seems to me that there are specific dealerships that cator to the bigger trucks and seem more knowlegeable.
Jeb,
Seeing how you have and a Chevy and Ford what are the differances in the tranny. Torqueshift vs. Allison. Does the Torqueshift have defuels and all that?

See, the thing is, I'm not anti Ford in the least, I just tend to think for myself, and I know what I like - and I know what I don't like.
I speak my mind regardless of whether it's popular or not. For instance, lets suppose Ford's next version of the Super Duty turned out to be something as hideous as the current chassis with an Aerostar cab and a pickup bed attached to it .
There are probably many who would force themselves to like a monstrosity like that just because it wears a blue oval. I would speak out aganst the abomination however, because I simply could never make myself accept it as being a "Super Duty".
There are some things I like about all three- and your comment was not out of line in the least, and in fact I agree with you - solid axles are MUCH better on a heavy duty 4x4 which is meant to be used as a heavy duty 4x4.
There are some GM owners/fans who have peed me off as well.
I was up at the dump one day unloading my 98' F150, when another Ford pulls up along the other side of the dumpster directly across from me. It was a pristine 96' F150 with blue and white two tone paint( much better condition than mine). It had a 4.9L/ 5speed combo -the same combo I once owned. I proceeded to compliment him on having such a nice truck, only to be cut off mid way through my compliment, (Him)"It's not mine buddy, it's my boss'es, I would'int be caught dead in a Ford."(Me) Well, what would you be caught in?" (Him) I'm a Chevy man, Ford's are dogs". (Me) "Good thing for this dog I'm driving now, I've got two POS Chevy's sitting home right now, and both are down. They can't be used to haul my garbage, so maybe I'll use my Ford to haul them AS garbage." After some finger flipping, along with a few crude remarks from each of us, he sped off leaving me to finish dumping my garbage off. Good thing he wasint stupid enough to try me. There was no truth in my statement about the two broken down GM's sitting at home, and everyone here pretty much knows I like them well enough. But this guy saw I was driving a Ford myself, and had to know he was out of line with those rude remarks. He had it coming. Anyone who tries to dis any of my trucks just for the sake of it, is also trying to dis me- so they get some back, along with some change thrown in.
I like that your proud of your Ford(s). I'm proud of mine too, it's just that I've owned and do own now, other trucks of which I'm just as proud. None of them are "best", but they're all really good in their own way.
I had a similar experience not too long ago. I was at school in the shop, cleaning up some welding I had just done. A friend of mine comes up and asks me if I could take a refrigerator to his house from school for him to work on. Then he goes on to say that he doubts my Ford can handle it and that it's a piece, and he says he has a tow chain waiting, I just laughed and took the refrigerator anyway. About 1/2 way to his house, his Jeep, complete with a "The Surgeon General said nothing about smoking a Ford" sticker in the rear window, knocks off and he coasts to a stop in the middle of the road. I check traffic and pull around front, and I take MY tow cable out and hook it up to the Jeep, and I pulled that piece of "work" to his house. That shut him up real quick. I ain't heard not another negative word out of him about a Ford. I could have left him sitting there.
Thats some friend you got there. He asks you to haul a refrigerator to his house. Then he says you might not be able to handle it.then insults your truck. You did your good deed for the day you hauled his refrigerator home and towed him also. Iguess your ford was more capable than he thought. Well at least when he gets his jeep going again you won't have to see that stupid sticker anymore.
The allison was a good, reliable tranny as has been the Torqueshift. Not a single problem with either one. But the Ford tranny seems to shift a little smoother (although I get the occasional reverse to drive clunk out of it) through the gears. The thing I like best about the ford is towing. The tranny holds top gear a lot longer before down shifting while interstate cruising in hilly areas. The dmax/allison was much busier in this dept. Not that it didn't pull as well, it was just shifting a lot more. The tow/haul is much more useful on the torqueshift, too.
Now, the towing thing might have some or all to do with the extra power that the 6.0 is suppose to have and/or engine/tranny management systems but I prefer it overall to the duramax/allison that I had in this one area.
Would that keep me from looking at another dmax? No, it was not that big a deal. But the Ford does a nicer job in this area, for sure. I'd say both trannys are great but I prefer the torqueshift thus far.
My new turbo goes back to the shop on Monday. It's developed a dead pedal/turbo lag thing off a moderatly hard launch. The old one didn't do that. They'll also try to plug my newest oil leak.
My brother and went shopping for trucks when his 97 Cummins injector pump began to give a few problems at 180,000 miles. He really wanted a PSD this time, but ended up buying another Dodge. The final decision was simply cost. The black six speed Dodge 3500 quad cab 4x4, ended up costing 33,200. The comparable six speed F350 was 37,000 bottom dollor. The comparable (is that possible?)Chevy 3500 was well over 42,000. My brother summed it up to the salesman this way: "You have the least truck for the most money. You would have to save me 10,000, not ask me to pay 10,000 more, compared to the Dodge, to get me to drive anything that ugly." I was trying hard not to be rude, by laughing out loud.
I peronsally thought older bodystyle looked better than the one they have now. The trucks look like they're always angry about something. Not to poke fun, but thats the way I see it.
As far as looks go the front of the superduty has the best looking front of any truck out there. There is no comparison. The looks of the newer Chevy trucks destroyed the whole look of that truck . I wouldnt feel comfortable driving that truck with that grill. Chevy fans arnt to happy with that front either.

I have to agree on that. I would sooner get a Superduty or even a dodge before I'd haul off and buy a truck like that. But who knows? Chevy may just get a clue and resdesign sometime soon.
Yea, I have to admit (and I'm a Chevy guy) it is the 1 disappointment I have is in the overall exterior stealing of the new Silverado. Love the truck overall and the look is growing on me after owning it for 8 months. But my goodness you'd think they could come up with something a little better looking. Overall my favorite look is the new Dodges, Ford being second (First in the 1/2) and Chevy dead last.
I guess when you think about it, they do look a little angry.
Jeb, thx for the response on the tranny info. I'm guessing what your describing by holding the gear could be a result of the higher RPM that the PSD pulls - Just a thought (I think that higher RPM is an idea whos time has come and hope to see more of it). I only pull 11,000lbs and run the Juice with the Attitude so I don't usually downshift anyway (I'm cheating I know).
Does that TorquseShift have defuels and Grade-Braking? I haven't driven in 1 while pulling anything yet.

Some Chevy guys claim to really like that front end - I'm not 1 of them
