Well, it's time.
I've got 3 FE's to go through.
First one is for my little brother (even though he's almost a foot taller ) He's got a 72 F250 Sport Custom w/AT.
That one's going to get a 901, 4v and Duraspark conv.
Second one is the one that's in my truck right now, it gets a freshening up. (neighbor wants it for his 4x4, as of current he wants to trade me a 302/C4/Tcase combo for my 84 XJ Cherokee ).
Third one is going to be my new one, not a screamer but more than what I have now.
So I'm looking at the Crane 801, or should I go with the 941. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to go adjustable, So.....Who's valvetrain should I look at, ie. Erson, Harland? How are the Crane adjustables?
I considered the 200.00 crane adjustables and the Comp Cams 308.00 needle bearing adjustibles as well as the 610.00 Erson's. Even considered some used ford factory adjustibles. After changeing my mind a half dozen times I went with the Ersons. The reason was: They are a complete setup just bolt them on. They are good for 800lbs. spring pressures. I don't need all this right now but will be upgradeing my cam as I get more serious about drag racing.
Since I don't plan on racing the truck , I will probably just go with either the crane's or comp's.
Talked with the lil' bro today, and he's excited. He just wants a reliable motor for hauling wood and going to the dump and doing some pulling with.
So, I think he'll get the regular Performer and a 600 holley and a 901.....Sound like an OK combo?
Unless you are wanting to lose some weight I would save some money and get a 4v intake from the junkyard. The plain performer won't perform any better than a stock 4v. It is just lighter. The Performer RPM is a different story. if you want to spend the money on a new intake I would go with the Performer RPM. The bottom end performance is good and the mid range to upper rpm performance is alot better tha stock or the plain performer.
O.K.
I was wondering why you wanted new rockers .From the descrption you gave for your brothers needs it didn't make sense. The rockers are for you then?
You should really consider the comp over the crane. The crane's are just stock adjustibles with a roller tip. The comp's have needle bearings at the shaft. with the stock shafts and stand you will need them. As you probly know the stock shaft and stands do occasionally break. Good luck.
