I bought some Rancho RS5000 shocks awhile back. I put the fronts on but recently noticed the top rubber bushing on one side has slipped through the mounting hole leaving it to be washer on metal essentially. I plan to remount them tomorrow, so While I was at it I wanted to throw on the Rear shocks that I had not gotten around to installing. Does anyone know the process to follow in mounting Rear Shocks? In other words is there things i need to do such as jack and jack stand placements, or do i need to do them both at same time, one at a time? I am a novice when it comes to mechanical work but would hate to have to waste the money if this could be a simple bolt on job. If any of you could offer some advice on the installation process for installing Rear shocks on a 1997 Expedition I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Also anyone know if there is a way to buy replacements for the plastic steps on nerf bars? mine cracked and are slowly breaking apart but I would hate to have to buy all new nerf bars.
As for changing the shocks, I just unbolt the old ones and bolt in the new. The truck/suv won't fall down if you remove a shock, but you can use a jackstand if it makes you feel safer. If you want to go to the trouble of removing the tire for better access, then use a jackstand under the frame while using a jack, just in case the jack breaks or slips. Keep the strap on the new shock that holds it from extending, then cut it after bolting up the shock. You can use the jack to raise or lower the axle to line up the shock bolts if you need to. By all means, do one side at a time! Don't overtighten the bolts past the point where they are squashing the bushings for the shock.
Thanks everyone. Just wasnt sure If i needed the back end up in the air or if there was any special tools, extensions etc that would be needed. Thanks for the help.
