HEY,
I KNOW THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE THAT HAVE AN OPINION ON THIS. IF IT WASN'T FOR THIS WEBSITE.. I WOULDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM WITH THIS MOTOR. I AM JUST TRYING TO SEE HOW MANY OWNERS ARE DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM..... SO, I HOPE YOU WILL VOTE....
Another question for everyone is how do you know if any recall work has been, or not been, done if you are the second owner? I think I saw a thread stating something about chain tensioners (?) that could be fixed under the recall upto 72k miles and I'm knocking at that door within a few months.
Having that problem as we speak. I had taken my 98 Sport to the dealer and according to them the Rattling noise was normal. I took the service manager out with me and he said thats what it is the tensioner, but, it was not loud enough for them to replace at that time, so i called Fords Customer Service Dept, and put it on file just incase it breaks and my motor seizes up. They said it should have been replaced if its making that Metallic rattling noise. If you need it the Service # is 01m01 is Canada,, not sure about the States. Its for 7 yrs or 160000kms.
HEY, INSIST THEM TO BE CHANGE. JUST KEEP PUSHING IT. IF YOU GO PAST THE MARK TO FIX IT .. YOU WILL EAT IT. AND IT IS REALLY HARD TO SWALLOW. I AM CHOKING ON IT AS WE SPEAK. I WANT TO KICK THE ***** OUT OF THE OWNER(S) BEFORE ME. THEY SCREWED IT UP FOR ME. IT CAN BE EXPENSIVE IF YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT ...... GO TO THE DEALERS AND PULL THE VIN # AND GET THE FED BACK ON IT IF THERE WAS ANY WORK DONE ON IT ALREADY. NOW FOR THE OTHER QUESTION..... IT WOULD BE IN THE SYSTEM WITH THE DEALERS IF THEY DID THE WORK ON IT. IF THE OWNER BEFORE YOU DID IT ELSE-WHERE,,, CALL THEM AND ASK IF THEY DID IT OR NOT.. IT DOESN'T HURT TO ASK. IF YOU CAN'T DO THAT,, GO TO A MECHANIC YOU TRUST AND PAID TO SEE IF IT WAS DONE. DON'T WAIT. IT WILL COST MORE IN THE END IF YOU LET IT GO ON FOR TOO- LONG
What happens is that the cassettes are made out of plastic and they break off causing a weird noise when it starts. I am going to give you all the three warnings to this type of motor.

This is what dealer pulled off my vin # to see if there was any recalls or warnings . I hope this helps. I know that if the customers complains about hearing a noise, the dealers are to look into the recall and fix the problem..... ........How long have you had this SUV?????? .......
Just picked it up 2 weeks ago from a used car dealer. Found this site afterwards. May have looked a little harder had I done more research!! It is very clean and was taken care of-runs perfect to date with no unusual sounds/noises. Starts everytime, no smoke, accelerates strong and shifts fine. I'll get it in to the Ford dealer and have them run a diagnostic on it.

There are alot of small recalls, the ones that I listed were considered to be the butt of all the problems ......I am willing to deal with my motor because I know after I am done, she should run.....sweet..... .......I hope everyone who ran into this problem don't give up on this motor. It really kick serious butt ....I hope my truck will ....Oo
I had a 98' Mountaineer that had a recall for the timing belt chain tensioner. I took it into the dealership to have it fixed. They took a look at it and said it didn't need replaced, then charged me $130 for their time to look at it!!! I was pretty peeved about it and complained, but just paid it, assured them I would never buy another vehicle from them and unloaded the Mountaineer a couple of months later.
