the problem im at now is the flywheel that i have for the 289 is smaller in diameter and will not bolt to the torq converter. so im going to try and use the 5.o flywheel that came on the Bronco

You have to get the flywheel rebalanced!!!!! You can see the difference in the weights on the two flywheels. This will be a big waste of your time to install and could cause engine damage as well from the incorrect balance.

what if the weight from the 289 is put in the same place as the wt on the 5.0? you say that one is 28 and one is 50 that should correct the problem right?

Yes you can have that done but welding it back on will change the balance as well and you would have to locate it in the correct spot which you won't know. You really should just take the flywheel to a speed shop and let them just rebalance the 5.0 flywheel. They will just remove the weight from the flywheel to get it to 28oz.

Suggestion: find yourself an older Bronco that the 289 will fit, or trade the 289 for a late model 302.

why would the Harmonic balancer and the flex plate have the same balance i thought the harmonic balancer is what balanced the engine i see the weight on the flex plate but isnt that to just balance the flex plate? so on pre 1981 both the Harmonic balancer and the flex plate were 28 OZ wt on each? and on 1981 and up they are 50 OZ wt on each? the problem with useing a pre 81 flex plate is that Bronco did not come with an AOD Transmission so i dont know if it will bolt to the torque converter. in 1980 the options were C-4 and C-6 transmissions. im not at all familiar with this stuff so be patient. The rest of the swap is going good the Dipstick worked fine and with no adjustment needed it reads very accurate by lacating it in the timeing cover my last problem before setting it in is the flexplate problem

used a flex plate from a 1977 351W truck everything matched up great Bronco is now running with no problems and sounds good so far the 289 with 351 W heads has lots of power I wasnt sure that it would have enough but it has more than the 5.0 had thanks to all the answered questions

What year heads do you have? Do they have positive stop rockers or the fully adjustable kind? If they are positive stop then they should be torqued down (26ftlbs I think) and if they are not positive stop rockers then they need to be adjusted with the motor running. If they need to be adjusted while the motor is running then you will loosen the rocker arm until it makes noise and then tighten the rocker arm until the noise goes goes away. Once the noise is gone tighten the rocker arm nut 90 degrees more and your done.

A fully adjustable rocker arm wioll have a loc nut on the stud and the rocker arm will not sit flat on the head.
