fuel pumps

I have a 79 F150 4X4 with a 400 ci 2barrel carb. When I reach speed over 55 to 60 I no longer have any passing gear, just a gradual increase in speed. I remember reading or hearing at one time that carb's can become starved from not receiving enough gas and thus limit their output. I curretnly have the standard mechanical fuel pump. My question is this would it help if I were to go to a larger fuel pump or even an electric one?

Your engine vacuum drops too low at those speeds. The vacuum modulator prevents downshifts at low vacuum.

Do you have a kick down linkage from the carb to the transmission?
