5.4 performance upgrades

I have a 1999 f150 4X4 with the 5.4L. Have had it for about 6 weeks now it has about 90,000 on it. I have put a flowmaster rear exit, superchips microtuner as well as a fipk from K&N and throttle body spacer (hey it was 20 bucks on ebay!) Maintenance wise I have changed the plugs, 4 coil packs, fuel filter, pcv valve and vacuum lines (cracking) also changed the MAF due to me cleaning the old one the wrong way. The engine runs well now, stronger, just looking for a little more power for pulling as well as from stop light to stoplight.... Power is addicting... any thoughts for upgrades that will not kill the checkbook? thanks all.

What gears do you have in the rear end? Lower gears would make that stop light to stop light accelation a bit quicker and will enable you to pull better too.

you've probably got 3.55's. i swaped mine for some 4.56's and it made a night and day difference. only problem is the speedo will be off....but who cares, just find one of those "check your speed" things

Changeing gears is a good and cheap way at first, but say good bye to gas milage, which in turn can end up costing more in the long run.

I wouldnt go any lower than 3.73's if you want to keep a respectable mpg number.

If you put on large tires, 4.10 gears may be a good idea, especially if your stock ones were like 29" or something. Lower gearing will make highway mileage suffer but in city driving it will be better because your motor won't have to work as hard to get the truck moving.

Ritchie,
I have the same truck as you do and I have done all the same stuff that you did. I was in search for the exact same thing... light to light and pulling power. First I tried the Air Raid throttle body spacer with no success. I took it out when my friend told me about a modification called Power Now Automotive and it made a huge difference. It also seemed to help my gas mileage. It only took like 3 minutes to install at the throttle body. Check it out at www.powernowautomotive.com Good luck!!

Ritchie, i have the same truck as well and i added a k&n cold air intake...package said 20-23hp gain, not sure if it was that much, but i did notice a very good gain over the factory system...and a better ROAR under the hood from that massive intake boost, you can really "hear" the difference!! hope it helps!
