Turbin or turbine

Here's one that bugs me. Americans call turbines (long I), turbins (short I). WHY?
Wine is wine not win, a pine tree is a pine tree not a pin tree, salt water is brine not brin, a pane of glass is a pane not pan.
Up here a tubin (how we say it, spelled turban) is headress worn by a certain religious group.

Whats up?

You'd really have a cow over then over someone calling a motorcycle a sickle (spelt cycle).

Z or ZED? What's a Zed? I know what a Z is, but I don't see a ED after it in the alphabet so why call it Zed?

Same kinda thing as the turbin / turbine thing.

Just to name a few.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-May-02 AT 11:38 PM (EST)] Ultramagadan (sounds like your bragging ) Motorsickle is Hick for motorcycle it's just nick name like Murdersickle.
Icelander. I work with a few Newfies and other assorted east coasters. We'll just put them in their own little world. They say things like>>> whered you get that to? Where are you to? Stay there I'll comes were your at? and so on. I heard it(turbin) the other day on the speed channel. The fellow was talking about a turbo charger. Plus I'm power engineer by trade and work with steam and gas turBINEs and it seems that they are turBINs south of our boarder.
Dennis. I'm impressed that takes a lot of ZEEEL to come with so many Zed words
And the Wiz is right

(what did john do to deserve that honor)
Why, he invented the head of course! (John Crapper that is) i looked it up in school last year, because the teacher lectured us onhe how "crapper" was an innapropriate term, and not correct. boy, was she mad when we showed in our history books

Not to get completely off the subject...but while we are on a history lesson of coincidently named inventors i.e John Crapper let's not forget about the inventor of the bra Otto Titslinger.

Must be ebonics for the white man. Like read (reed) or read (red). The spelling is the same, but two different meanings. We Americans apparently do things our own way. We must be special.
